Maria Delaney is from Ireland and currently lives in Dublin. Science has always been her passion and she graduated with a first-class degree specialising in genetics from Trinity College Dublin. During her college career, she was the recipient of a Bill Vincent Award to work in Prof. Chenghua Gu’s Neurobiology Lab at Harvard Medical School. As a Health Research Board Summer Student Scholar, she completed a project in Dr Aoife McLysaght’s Molecular Evolution Laboratory at Trinity College Dublin. In June 2011, Maria set up a science blog, ScienceCalling.com. It was shortlisted for national web and blog awards in 2011 and 2012. She is part of the @Science140 team who collated thousands of science definitions and explanations in 140 characters via Twitter. These were compiled by the four-man team to create the book, A Neutron Walks Into A Bar, to be released on 18th October 2012. With four years experience in the medical science industry, she has now decided to focus on science communication. Receiving a fully paid scholarship, Maria is currently completing an MA in Journalism at Dublin City University.
